a5c7b9f00b Forced by the imminent foreclosure of their friend's bar, two lifelong buddies will decide to rob a bank's armoured car, not knowing that its cargo is not money but a new street drug. Two lone riders and childhood friends, the rough and silent Harley Davidson and the ragged sun-baked cowboy Marlboro, assemble once more when they learn that their favourite hangout and the place where they grew up, the notorious Rock 'n' Roll Bar and Grill is facing imminent foreclosure. For this reason, against the preposterous demands for a new contract, the two lifelong buddies in unflinching determination to win back the bar, they will decide to hold up the corrupt bank's armoured car, unbeknownst to them that its cargo is not money but a new lethal and highly experimental street drug: the Crystal Dream. Now the bank wants it back and they are unstoppable. Is everything lost for Harley and Marlboro, the two well-meaning but amateurish thieves? In much the same waycigarette packets carry warnings and motorcycles can be lethal if in the wrong hands, this movie shows that being a 'MAN' can sometimes be a tough proposition! There are few finer exponents of 'macho cool' in Hollywood than Mickey Rourke and Don Johnson; they both have the same grit and craggy weatherbeaten air that suggests they've lived a tumultuous life about ten times over; so there's surely no two better people to casta pair of cool, jaded outlaws? This is a movie that wears it's brawling credentials proudly on its sleeve, and actsa kind of sad and ironic late goodbye to the unselfconscious action pictures that characterised the 80's decade. It opts to play its masculinity completely straight eventhe viewers themselves are aware that it's faintly ridiculous. In that sense, it reminded me a whole lot of "Road House" - Good, cheesy fun.

It takes a special kind of skill to deliver what might seem risible dialogue in a deadpan way, and both Rourke and Johnson have it, which makes this film a really enjoyable experience, if by no means a masterpiece. It's the kind of movie they don't make any more. Packed with testosterone and huge loads of male pride, Harley and Marlboro set out to kick some ass. I really love this movie because it shows like friendship between men works or at least how it is supposed to work. Even though the two main characters haven't met for years, they know where the other one is and when they come together again it's like they never were apart. They also help each other regardless if it will cost their live because in their mind "It's better to be dead and cool, than alive and uncool." (Harley Davidson) Of course this attitude brings them nothing but trouble but those two take it the macho-way and stand to whatever comes up. And for those who only think it's a modern macho western: "Back off!!" Take a closer look and you will see that there is a lot of soul and spirit hidden between the macho talking and behaviour.
